Humboldt Free Radio presents: The Future Is Unwritten a weekend of psych rock. Chapter Three brings the festival to Aunty Mo’s in Eureka on Sunday, September 7 and will feature Nebula and Totimoshi.
Sub Pop Records artists Nebula (Los Angeles) : Southern California’s Nebula are veterans of the psych/stoner rock scene and are well renowned for their mesmerizing live sets, which are highlighted by guitarist Eddie Glass’s blistering and spaced-out guitar jams. The band’s catalog includes a variety of releases, including well-received efforts on Sub Pop, Tee Pee, and Mans Ruin. This will be Nebula’s first visit to Humboldt County, one that is sure to long endure in the minds of those who attend. Incidentally, Nebula’s latest effort is titled Heavy Psych and will be available at the show.

Volcom Entertainment artists Totimoshi (Alameda) : The Bay Area’s Totimoshi will also be featured on Sunday night’s event, and while it may be a stretch to say the power trio is psych-influenced, their latest release Milagrosa does find the band edging closer to some straight-up jams. Totimoshi have been busy lately, touring with the likes of Helmet, Mastodon, and the Melvins, as well as signing to Volcom Records.

Machete (Humboldt) : Local hard rockers Machete round out the bill and will certainly open the night with a loud bang and wallop.

Datura Blues (Portland) : Datura Blues, whose formative roots can be traced back to a cold and stormy night in Humboldt County, will open the show with their unique blend of psychedelic madness, one that incorporates elements of folk, punk, krautrock, and improvisational jams into the mix. It may seem strange, but I love music that breaks my heart, music that makes me weep. And the gut-wrenching release, Manresa Castle by Port Townsend's Solvents does just that, on nearly every listen. There is an achieness to the album that I love, which I see as very similar to two of my favorite albums of all time - Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over The Sea and Dirty Three's Ocean Songs. The bare bones delivery, of an acoustic guitar, some sparse drums and ghostly strings lays the pain-stakingly honest lyrics in the open for you to share in their woe. After 2006, it was uncertain if there would be another Howlin Rain record. Well, at least in the mind of the musical world at large.

For Ethan Miller, the group’s founder, visionary, songwriter and singer, the collapse of the original line-up was just a set back. There was no licking of wounds, no uncertainty. Miller simply went back to the formula he used after first conceiving Howlin Rain during a winter storm at his cabin on the Eel River: write a batch of undeniable songs, gather his talented friends and create a signature musical language.

Greg Ginn doesn’t believe in categories or boundaries when it comes to his music. Sure, he was the founding member and guitarist of the infamous band Black Flag, but he loves jazz, techno and has a profound respect for Jerry Garcia.

Epic Trilogy, the latest release from Gone, is the band's tenth album in more than 20 years, and the first to be released on SST Records since 1998’s Country Dumb. Epic Trilogy hits the ground running in true Gone fashion, blending heavy guitar with funky, jazz infused chords and an edgy, surfer punk vibe. The driving repetition is almost hypnotic, but then, dramatically, it cuts to a groove that puts the FU in funk.

This time around, Gone is made up of Ginn on guitar and bass, Andy Batwinas (Hor, Screw Radio) on keys and percussion, and Drummer (yep, that’s his name) on…well, drums. Though traditionally an instrumental band, Epic Trilogy features guest vocalist HR (Bad Brains, Human Rights) in a crafty background style that you will have to hear for yourself to fully capture the dynamic.

Redwood Acres Fair starts today. On tap tonight, musically, is Robotronica, electropunk from Bellingham, Washington. Their tongue in cheek on stage schtick and the autobiographical fat-kid anthem Jelly Rolls prove that they’ve got nothing to prove. They do what they do because they love it. Between shredding keys and shrieking lyrics, Anderson heaves himself headlong into the audience with his trusty SM58 vocal mic in hand, while King lets loose with chugging power chords and bursts of lead flourish and Neal decimates the audience with his thundering bass. By the end of the high-impact, in-your-face show, the gargantuan Anderson and King are drenched in sweat, while the diminutive-by-comparison Neal is barely breathing hard. The Fucking Buckaroos (stationed in San Francisco, CA), were birthed in the fall of 2004 when four musicians with a common distaste for effects-ridden music began working hard to cause a ruckus that could snarl and claw its way through the hackneyed drone of modern sound, and relieve the world of this terrible burden. 17th Annual Arcata Bay Oyster Festival has become a tradition for local restaurateurs, executive chefs, and caterers to show off their culinary skills by preparing oysters in every imaginable way. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 16, 2007 on the Arcata Plaza!

More than 70% of the fresh oysters consumed in California are grown in 450 acres of Arcata Bay. June is a peak month for oyster harvests in Humboldt County. These oysters are are farmed in environmentally friendly bags tethered to posts in the Arcata Bay (no harmful dredging of the bay is necessary for their harvest).

Selections include barbecued oysters with green mango sauce, oyster tacos, oyster Rockefeller perogies, barbecued oysters with tart chili cucumber sauce, oyster stew, oyster burgers and deep-fried oysters abandon. With imagination and flair, one can eat away the entire day. The coals glow hot from early morning 'til the last oyster has been shucked.

Crowds throughout the day top 10,000 to 15,000, keeping local food vendors more than busy. Most festival vendors are chefs from Humboldt County's most appreciated restaurants. Each year festival chefs compete in the annual oyster tasting competition to claim the auspicious award of 'Best Oyster of the Festival' and 'Peoples' Choice.'

New this year is the Shuck and Swallow Contest, where teams ign up to eat as many oysters as they can within a specified period of time

Billy Midnight are touring in support of their new CD Divided Too Long which is dropping July, 21 2007 at The Casba in San Diego.

Billy Midnight Brothers Bobby and Billy Shaddox were exposed to music from an early age. Their father, Tom, would softly croon acoustic lullabies like Danny’s Song and House at Pooh Corner at the side of their crib. With keen instincts dad penned a song for his boys called, Bobby the Frog & Billy the Duck, calculating into the song the boys distinct natures and opposite personalities. From early on Billy showed a fondness for the guitar and following in the tradition of his father and grandfather, he diligently learned chords and basic finger picking patterns. Billy says that in his early teens, Jimi Hendrix fired his imagination and led him to explore the genres of Rock, Blues, Country and Bluegrass. On the other hand, Bobby found the guitar challenging and turned his interests towards singing. They say Bobby was, Gifted with a very loud voice and love for entertaining.

The brothers were both exploring their musical talents at this time separately. It wasn’t until junior college that Billy joined Bobby’s group which was renamed from Sgt.X to Naked Jumpies. This venture however, collapsed due to artistic differences and the brothers drifted apart musically. After other unsuccessful attempts to find the right mix, it wasn’t until fate stepped in, and over a backyard bonfire the pair met Chris Greenspan, a wise cracking, street-smart fellow. I guess I'm not a big EMI fan as the only album I bought was Grand Funk Railroad. iTunes Plus must be getting hammered. I have been trying for 2 days to download the upgraded version of my 1 album. I suggest waiting a few days if you plan on upgrading your songs. Once they are in your "downloads" you can't remove them, least I haven't figured out how, and every time the download fails you get an annoying little pop-up. If you plan on buying music on iTunes please use the Plus service. Let the record industry know that this is how you want your music. Without copy protection, and able to play it on any of your devices, at any time.

note: After 2 days of trying to download the Grand Funk Railroad album upgrade, this morning the last three remaining songs downloaded in about in about 5 minutes. Go give iTunes Plus some love...oh...I almost forgot. One way I found to stop the forced downloads (upgrade) is to "pause all" in the iTunes "download" window. I have been playing with Attendio for about a couple weeks now and I have to say It works very well. Very easy to input data. I like the widget, of your events, that you can add to your blog, Facebook, MySpace and other social networks. I have only found one bug. When I click on the calender icon in the "add new event" page the small pop up calender only opens half way. I can drag it full but still annoying. Also, I wish there were options for different color widgets. I like it and suggest you go give it a look.
